5 Signs You Need to See a Dentist Right Now (Don’t Wait Until It Hurts More)

·

Dental problems rarely appear out of nowhere. In most cases, there are clear, recognisable warning signs that something is wrong — signs that your mouth has been sending for weeks or even months before the situation becomes a genuine emergency. The challenge is that many of these signals are easy to dismiss, minimise, or simply decide to deal with “when I get around to it.”

At Clear Care Dental, we see the consequences of ignored warning signs every single week. A patient who might have needed a simple filling arrives needing a root canal. Someone who noticed gum bleeding months ago now needs periodontal therapy. The earlier you act, the simpler, faster, and less expensive the solution.

Here are five signs that mean you should call us today — not next month.

1. Toothache or Persistent Sensitivity

Any toothache — sharp, dull, constant, or triggered by biting, heat, or cold — is your tooth telling you that something is wrong. Pain in a tooth most commonly indicates decay that has reached deeper layers of the tooth, a cracked or fractured tooth, an abscess, or a dying or dead nerve. None of these improve without treatment. Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers for more than a few seconds after the stimulus is removed is a particular warning sign that should prompt a dental visit promptly.

Do not wait for the pain to become unbearable. The earlier we identify the cause, the more conservative and affordable the treatment is likely to be.

2. Bleeding Gums

Many people notice blood on their toothbrush or when they spit after brushing and dismiss it as “normal” or caused by brushing “too hard.” In reality, healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding gums are the primary early symptom of gingivitis — inflammation of the gum tissue caused by plaque build-up. Untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, a more serious infection of the structures supporting the teeth that can lead to irreversible bone loss and ultimately tooth loss.

The good news: gingivitis is almost completely reversible with professional treatment and improved home care. But only if addressed early. If your gums bleed regularly, please book an appointment.

3. A Loose Tooth (in an Adult)

Children expect loose teeth. Adults should not have them. A loose adult tooth is an urgent signal, almost always indicating significant bone loss due to advanced gum disease, or trauma. In either case, early intervention gives the best chance of saving the tooth. A loose tooth that is ignored will eventually be lost — and once gone, replacing it requires far more treatment and expense than saving it would have.

4. A Lump, Sore, or Patch That Won’t Heal

Any unusual lump, sore, ulcer, or discoloured patch inside your mouth that has persisted for more than two to three weeks without improving must be professionally assessed. While the vast majority of such lesions are benign and easily explained, mouth ulcers and soft tissue changes can in some cases be early signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer survival rates are dramatically better when detected early — and every comprehensive check-up at Clear Care Dental includes an oral cancer screening.

5. A Broken, Cracked, or Missing Filling or Crown

A broken filling or crown is not merely a cosmetic concern. The tooth underneath is now exposed and unprotected — vulnerable to rapid decay, sensitivity, cracking, and infection. Many patients delay getting a broken restoration replaced because it is not causing pain. But by the time pain develops, the underlying damage is often significantly worse.

Clear Care Dental is open seven days a week, from 09:00 to 20:00 — including weekends and public holidays. If you are experiencing any of the signs above, please do not wait. Call us, WhatsApp us, or book online right now.
